RESUMEN

Seed endophytic microbiomes are shaped by host and environmental factors and play a crucial role in their host growth and health. Studies have demonstrated that host genotype, including hybridization, affects seed microbiomes. Heterosis features are also observed in root-associated microbiomes. It remains unclear, however, whether heterosis exists in seed endophytic microbiomes and whether hybrid microbiota provide noticeable advantages to host plant growth, especially to seed germination. Here, we investigated the structure of seed endophytic bacterial and fungal communities from three hybrid rice varieties and their respective parents using amplicon sequencing targeting 16S rRNA and ITS2 genes. Heterosis was found in diversity and composition of seed endophytic microbiomes in hybrids, which hosted more diverse communities and significantly higher abundances of plant growth-promoting taxa, such as Pseudomonas and Rhizobium genera compared with their parental lines. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that there are potentially tighter microbial interactions in the hybrid seeds compared with their parent seeds. Finally, inoculation of seed-cultivable endophytes, isolated from hybrids, resulted in a greater promotion of seed germination compared with those isolated from parent lines. These findings suggest that heterosis exists not only in plant traits but also in seed endophytic microbiota, the latter in turn promotes seed germination, which offers valuable guidance for microbiome-assisted rice breeding.IMPORTANCEGenetic and physiological changes associated with plant hybridization have been studied for many crop species. Still, little is known about the impact of hybridization on the seed microbiota. In this study, we indicate that hybridization has a significant impact on the endophytic bacterial and fungal communities in rice seeds. The seed endophytic microbiomes of hybrids displayed distinct characteristics from those of their parental lines and exhibited potential heterosis features. Furthermore, the inoculation of seed-cultivable endophytes isolated from hybrids exhibited a greater promotion effect on seed germination compared with those isolated from the parents. Our findings make a valuable contribution to the emerging field of microbiome-assisted plant breeding, highlighting the potential for a targeted approach that aims to achieve not only desired plant traits but also plant-beneficial microbial communities on the seeds.

RESUMEN

To explore the mandibular retromolar space length (MRSL), initial root-inner cortex contact percentage (IRCCP), and the various factors that influence mandibular molar distalization. Searches were undertaken in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and grey literature (Google Scholar and OpenGrey) for eligible cross-sectional observational studies measuring the MRSL and IRCCP in healthy adult patients. The risk of bias and evidence quality were evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute's checklist and GRADE framework. Thirteen studies involving 1169 patients were included for qualitative synthesis. Seven of these studies were eligible for quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis showed that the mean MRSL at the subfurcation-6 mm plane in Asian normodivergent cases was 3.78 mm (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.81-4.35; I2 = 79.7%) for skeletal Class-I malocclusions, 3.02 mm (95% CI: 2.10-3.94; I2 = 62.5%) for Class-II, and 4.43 mm (95% CI: 3.14-5.73; I2 = 75.1%) for Class-III. The mean MRSL at the sub-cementoenamel junction (CEJ)-10 mm plane for Asian, Class-I, normodivergent cases was 3.28 mm (95% CI: 2.44-4.12; I2 = 68.9%). The mean IRCCP for Asian, Class-I, normodivergent cases was 27.2% (95% CI: 0.22-0.32; I2 = 0%). In Asian normodivergent cases, MRSL ranges from 3.28 to 4.43 mm with a 27.2% IRCCP for Class-I. Cone-beam computed tomography imaging is recommended for measuring the MRSL in the apex region particularly before molar distalization. Factors influencing MRSL and IRCCP include different races, skeletal patterns, facial types, and third-molar status.

RESUMEN

To explore the effects of different aeration methods on the abundance of microorganisms and microorganism community structure in rice rhizosphere soil, two rice varieties, Miyang 46(MY) and Zhenshan 97B(ZS), were used with three aeration treatments:alternate wetting and drying(AWD), continuous flooding and aeration(CFA), and continuous flooding(CF). The diversity of bacterial and fungal communities in rice rhizosphere soil was analyzed using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. Soil physical and chemical factors were also analyzed. The results showed that the dominant bacterial communities in rice rhizosphere soil were Chloroflexi, Actinobaciota, Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes, and the dominant fungal communities were Ascomycota and Basidiomycota in rice rhizosphere soil. At each growth stage, the relative abundance of Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria was higher in the AWD treatment than in the other treatments, and the relative abundance of Actinobaciota was higher in the CFA treatment than in the other treatments. The relative abundance of Firmicutes was lower in the AWD treatment than in the other treatments. Aeration methods affected the diversity and richness of rhizosphere microbial species. For example, the diversity of bacterial species was higher, and the richness of bacterial species was lower in the AWD treatment than that in the other treatments. The diversity and richness of fungal species were higher in the AWD and CFA treatments than those in the CF treatment. The physical and chemical properties of rhizosphere soil were also affected by aeration method. The soil redox potential(Eh) was the highest in AWD, followed by that in CFA and CF, and significant differences were observed among treatments. The NO3--N content was significantly higher, and the NH4+-N content was significantly lower in the AWD and CFA treatments than in the CF treatment in rhizosphere soil at all growth stages. Correlation analysis showed that the pH and Eh of rhizosphere soil were positively correlated with the diversity of bacterial species, negatively correlated with the richness of bacterial species, and positively correlated with the diversity and richness of fungal species. Redundancy analysis indicated that the relative abundance of Chloroflexi was positively correlated with the pH and NH4+-N content at each period, positively correlated with the Eh and NO3--N content at the tillering and heading stages, and negatively correlated with Eh and NO3--N content at the maturity stage. At each growth stage, the pH and Eh were positively correlated with the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Basidiomycota and negatively correlated with the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Ascomycota. During the entire growth period, the relative abundance of Ascomycota was negatively correlated with the NO3--N content and positively correlated with the NH4+-N content, and the opposite patterns were observed for the relative abundance of Basidiomycota. In summary, rhizosphere oxygenation enhanced the soil oxygen environment, altered soil physical and chemical properties, and affected microbial community diversity and richness to optimize microbial community structure.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate convolutional neural network algorithms for automatic upper airway segmentation and minimum cross-sectional area (CSAmin) localisation in two-dimensional (2D) radiographic airway images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and one 2D airway images acquired using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning were randomly assigned to a test group (n = 161) to train artificial intelligence (AI) models and a validation group (n = 40) to evaluate the accuracy of AI processing. Four AI models, UNet18, UNet36, DeepLab50 and DeepLab101, were trained to automatically segment the upper airway 2D images in the test group. Precision, recall, Intersection over Union, the dice similarity coefficient and size difference were used to evaluate the performance of the AI-driven segmentation models. The CSAmin height in each image was manually determined using three-dimensional CBCT data. The nonlinear mathematical morphology technique was used to calculate the CSAmin level. Height errors were assessed to evaluate the CSAmin localisation accuracy in the validation group. The time consumed for airway segmentation and CSAmin localisation was compared between manual and AI processing methods. RESULTS: The precision of all four segmentation models exceeded 90.0%. No significant differences were found in the accuracy of any AI models. The consistency of CSAmin localisation in specific segments between manual and AI processing was 0.944. AI processing was much more efficient than manual processing in terms of airway segmentation and CSAmin localisation. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully developed and validated a fully automatic AI-driven system for upper airway segmentation and CSAmin localisation using 2D radiographic airway images.

RESUMEN

Phase separation is a universal physical transition process whereby a homogeneous mixture splits into two distinct compartments that are driven by the component activity, elasticity, or compositions. In the current work, we develop a series of heterogeneous colloidal suspensions that exhibit both liquid-liquid phase separation of semiflexible binary polymers and liquid crystal phase separation of rigid, rod-like nanocellulose particles. The phase behavior of the multicomponent mixture is controlled by the trade-off between thermodynamics and kinetics during the two transition processes, displaying cholesteric self-assembly of nanocellulose within or across the compartmented aqueous phases. Upon thermodynamic control, two-, three-, and four-phase coexistence behaviors with rich liquid crystal stackings are realized. Among which, each relevant multiphase separation kinetics shows fundamentally different paths governed by nucleation and growth of polymer droplets and nanocellulose tactoids. Furthermore, a coupled multiphase transition can be realized by tuning the composition and the equilibrium temperature, which results in thermotropic behavior of polymers within a lyotropic liquid crystal matrix. Finally, upon drying, the multicomponent mixture undergoes a hierarchical self-assembly of nanocellulose and polymers into stratified cholesteric films, exhibiting compartmentalized polymer distribution and anisotropic microporous structure.

RESUMEN

Background: Doppler ultrasonography is used to study ovarian vascular characteristics. However, the outcomes are reported with a considerable variability in literature. Here we review the differences in Doppler ultrasound-measured ovarian blood flow indices between women with and without ovarian dysfunction and seeks correlations between Doppler measures and ovarian markers. Methods: A literature search was conducted in electronic databases (Google Scholar, Ovid, PubMed, Science Direct, and Springer) to identify studies that used Doppler for ovarian blood flow examination and reported Doppler measures in women with and without ovarian dysfunction and/or the correlations between wDoppler indices and markers of ovarian dysfunction. After quality assessment of included studies, a meta-analysis of weighted mean differences (WMDs) between women with and without ovarian dysfunction in vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI), vascularization flow index (VFI), pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) was performed. Correlation coefficients between Doppler indices and markers of ovarian dysfunction were pooled to achieve overall estimates. Results: A total of 27 studies [2,377 women with ovarian dysfunction and 308 controls; age 27.7 years, 95% confidence interval (CI): 26.4 to 29.1] were included. These studies were of moderate quality. The VI (WMD 9.75; P<0.0001), FI (WMD 2.73; P<0.0001), and VFI (WMD 1.29; P<0.0001) were significantly higher whereas PI (WMD -1.08; P=0.001) and RI (WMD -0.26; P<0.0001) were significantly lower in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) than in normal women. In women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), antral follicle count was positively correlated with VI (r=0.24; P=0.001), FI (r=0.42; P<0.0001), and VFI (r=0.25; P=0.002). In women with PCOS, testosterone had statistically non-significant correlations with VI (r=0.40; P=0.081), and VFI (r=0.39; P=0.063) and was inversely correlated with PI (r=-0.30; P<0.0001) and RI (r=-0.48; P<0.0001). In women with PCOS, luteinizing hormone (LH) was inversely correlated with PI (r=-0.26; P=0.086) and RI (r=-0.25; P=0.007). Conclusions: Doppler indices are found significantly different in women with and without ovarian dysfunction and have significant correlations with markers of ovarian dysfunction. These results support the use of Doppler ultrasound to examine ovarian dysfunction. High statistical heterogeneity observed herein should be studies in future investigations.

RESUMEN

Here, we describe the all-aqueous bicontinuous emulsions with cholesteric liquid crystal domains through hierarchical colloidal self-assembly of nanoparticles. This is achieved by homogenization of a rod-like cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) with two immiscible, phase separating polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran polymer solutions. The dispersed CNCs exhibit unequal affinity for the binary polymer mixtures that depends on the balance of osmotic and chemical potential between the two phases. Once at the critical concentration, CNC particles are constrained within one component of the polymer phases and self-assemble into a cholesteric organization. The obtained liquid crystal emulsion demonstrates a confined three-dimensional percolating bicontinuous network with cholesteric self-assembly of CNC within the PEG phase; meanwhile, the nanoparticles in the dextran phase remain isotropic instead. Our results provide an alternative way to arrest bicontinuous structures through intraphase trapping and assembling of nanoparticles, which is a viable and flexible route to extend for a wide range of colloidal systems.

RESUMEN

The intensive use of chemical fertilizer, particularly nitrogen (N) has resulted in not only markedly increased crop yields but also detrimental effects on ecosystems. Plant microbiomes represent an eco-friendly alternative for plant nutrition and productivity, and the effect of N fertilization on plant and soil microbes has been well studied. However, if and how N fertilization modulates seed endophytic microbiomes and grain quality remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of different N fertilization rates on rice seed endophytic bacterial and fungal communities as well as on grain quality. Higher bacterial and fungal community diversity and richness, but lower grain protein and amino acid contents were found in seeds of rice treated moderate N fertilization than those treated insufficient or excessive N input. There were also more complex co-occurrence networks, and an enrichment of putative beneficial bacterial taxa in seeds under moderate N application, while there was an opposite trend under the excessive N treatment. In addition, the grain amylose and amylopectin contents were positively correlated with the relative abundance of bacterial and fungal dominant genera, while the grain amino acid contents were negatively correlated with the bacterial dominant genera but positively associated with fungal dominant genera. Together, we demonstrate that moderate N fertilization can enhance bacterial and fungal community colonization in seeds and improve grain eating and cooking qualities. This study extends our knowledge regarding the significant role of rational fertilization on seed-microbe interactions in sustainable agriculture.

RESUMEN

Due to the secondary dentin formation, the dental pulp undergoes changes in shape throughout life. Based on this phenomenon, the Kvaal method has been applied to various populations for age estimation, and its usefulness has been verified. When applying the Kvaal method to Chinese subjects, we observed a relatively strong correlation between mandibular canines and age. This study notes the correlation between canines and chronological age and is the first to identify which canine is most closely related to chronological age. In addition, a new, simpler formula is determined based on canines according to Kvaal's methodology. The radiographs of 360 individuals from northern China were selected, from which the widths and lengths of the pulp from four canines were measured according to the Kvaal method. Next, inter- and intra-observer reliabilities were analyzed in order to assess the repeatability of these measurements. The correlation between measurements and age was examined, and Chinese-specific age estimation formulae were derived. The results revealed that the ratios from the left maxillary canine exhibited the strongest correlation with age compared to the other canines, whereas the left mandibular canine showed the weakest correlation, which may contribute to the overall poor correlation of mandibular canines with age. What's more, the formula derived from the left maxillary canine in this study displayed the highest coefficients of determination, and the formula derived from all canines showed the lowest residuals. Both of these formulae performed better than the Chinese-specific formula derived from six different types of teeth in our previous study, which had formerly possessed the highest coefficients of determination and the lowest residuals. Thus, we concluded that canines do play an important role in age estimation in the Chinese population, and the correlation between maxillary canines and chronological age is stronger than that of mandibular canines, although no distinct trend as to which side is better correlated with age was established. Going forward, we recommend the analysis of additional samples from different geographical regions and populations to further verify the importance of canines in age estimation.

RESUMEN

Active matter comprises individual energy-consuming components that convert locally stored energy into mechanical motion. Among these, liquid crystal dispersed self-propelled colloids have displayed fascinating dynamic effects and nonequilibrium behaviors. In this work, we introduce a new type of active soft matter based on swimming microalgae and lyotropic nanocellulose liquid crystal. Cellulose is a kind of biocompatible polysaccharide that nontoxic to living biological colloids. In contrast to microalgae locomotion in isotropic and low viscosity media, we demonstrate that the propulsion force of swimming microalgae can overcome the stabilizing elastic force in cholesteric nanocellulose liquid crystal, with the displacement dynamics (gait, direction, frequency, and speed) be altered by the surrounding medium. Simultaneously, the active stress and shear flow exerted by swimming microalgae can introduce local perturbation in surrounding liquid crystal orientation order. The latter effect yields hydrodynamic fluctuations in bulk phase as well as layer undulations, helicoidal axis splay deformation and director bending in the cholesteric assembly, which finally followed by a recovery according to the inherent viscoelasticity of liquid crystal matrix. Our results point to an unorthodox design concept to generate a new type of hybrid soft matter that combines nontoxic cholesteric liquid crystal and active particles, which are expected to open opportunities in biosensing and biomechanical applications.

RESUMEN

In this work, a desulfurization method using natural amino acid salts (AAS), which can be green prepared by biological fermentation, is proposed to remove H2S from raw biogas. Biogas purification and fertilizer production can be simultaneously achieved to close sulfur recycle. The reaction kinetic characteristics of H2S absorption with three kinds of AAS, including potassium ß-alaninate (PA), potassium sarcosinate (PS) and potassium l-prolinate (PP) are first studied. Kinetic parameters including orders of reaction, rate constants, pre-exponential factors and activation energies are given. AAS absorbent exhibits good potential for biogas desulfurization. Higee (high gravity) technology is utilized to intensify H2S removal. The effects of operating conditions on H2S removal efficiency are investigated and PP shows the best desulfurization performance. The phytotoxicity of AAS and amino acid salt sulfide (AASS) is assessed by the germination index of mungbean seeds. PP and its salt sulfide (PPS) show relatively low phytotoxicity and their allowable agricultural feeding concentrations are below 0.08 M and 0.04 M, respectively. The desulfurization method demonstrates a green route for biogas purification to achieve sulfur recycle.

RESUMEN

Hybrid japonica cultivars, such as the Yongyou series, have shown high yield potential in the field in both the early and late growing seasons. Moreover, understanding the responses of rice flowering dates to temperature and light is critical for improving yield performance. However, few studies have analyzed flowering genes in high-yielding japonica cultivars. Based on the five sowing date experiments from 2019 to 2020, select the sensitive cultivar Yongyou 538 and the insensitive cultivar Ninggeng 4 and take their flag leaves and panicles for transcriptome analysis. The results showed that compared with sowing date 1 (6/16), after the sowing date was postponed (sowing date 5, 7/9), 4480 and 890 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in the leaves and panicles in Ninggeng 4, 9275 and 2475 DEGs were detected in the leaves and panicles in Yongyou 538, respectively. KEGG pathway analysis showed that both Ninggeng 4 and Yongyou 538 regulated rice flowering through the plant circadian rhythm and plant hormone signal transduction pathways. Gene expression analysis showed that Os01g0566050 (OsELF3-2), Os01g0182600 (OsGI), Os11g0547000 (OsFKF1), Os06g0275000 (Hd1), and Os09g0513500 (FT-1) were expressed higher and Os02g0771100 (COP1-1) was expressed lower in Yongyou 538 compared with Ninggeng 4 as the climate conditions changed, which may be the key genes that regulate the flowering process with the change of temperature and light resources in sensitive cultivar Yongyou 538 in the late season.

RESUMEN

Lips are the main part of the lower facial soft tissue and are vital to forensic facial approximation (FFA). Facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) and linear measurements in three dimensions are used in the quantitative analysis of lip morphology. With most FSTT analysis methods, the surface of soft tissue is unexplicit. Our study aimed to determine FSTT and explore the relationship between the hard and soft tissues of lips in different skeletal occlusions based on cone-beam CT (CBCT) and 3dMD images in a Chinese population. The FSTT of 11 landmarks in CBCT and 29 lip measurements in CBCT and 3dMD of 180 healthy Chinese individuals (90 males, 90 females) between 18 and 30 years were analyzed. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups with different skeletal occlusions distributed equally: 156 subjects in the experimental group to establish the prediction regression formulae of lip morphology and 24 subjects in the test group to assess the accuracy of the formulae. The results indicated that FSTT in the lower lip region varied among different skeletal occlusions. Furthermore, sex discrepancy was noted in the FSTT in midline landmarks and linear measurements. Measurements showing the highest correlation between soft and hard tissues were between total upper lip height and Ns-Pr (0.563 in males, 0.651 in females). The stepwise multiple regression equations were verified to be reliable with an average error of 1.246 mm. The method of combining CBCT with 3dMD provides a new perspective in predicting lip morphology and expands the database for FFA.

RESUMEN

In this article, the application of nanocelluloses, especially cellulose nanofibrils and cellulose nanocrystals, as functional ingredients in foods is reviewed. These ingredients offer a sustainable and economic source of natural plant-based nanoparticles. Nanocelluloses are particularly suitable for altering the physicochemical, sensory, and nutritional properties of foods because of their ability to create novel structures. For instance, they can adsorb to air-water or oil-water interfaces and stabilize foams or emulsions, self-assemble in aqueous solutions to form gel networks, and act as fillers or fat replacers. The functionality of nanocelluloses can be extended by chemical functionalization of their surfaces or by using them in combination with other natural food ingredients, such as biosurfactants or biopolymers. As a result, it is possible to create stimuli-responsive, tailorable, and/or active functional biomaterials suitable for a range of foodapplications. In this article, we describe the chemistry, structure, and physicochemical properties of cellulose as well as their relevance for the application of nanocelluloses as functional ingredients in foods. Special emphasis is given to their use as particle stabilizers in Pickering emulsions, but we also discuss their potential application for creating innovative biomaterials with novel functional attributes, such as edible films and packaging. Finally, some of the challenges associated with using nanocelluloses in foods are critically evaluated, including their potential safety and consumer acceptance.

RESUMEN

RATIONALE: Cloacal malformation (CM) is a serious type of anorectal and urogenital tract malformation. However, prenatal ultrasound (US) detection of CM is challenging. In this paper, we reported a rare case of CM prenatally diagnosed by US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as reviewed the prenatal US and MRI characteristics of CM in the literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 30-year-old pregnant woman complained of cystic mass in the fetal abdomen detected by prenatal US. DIAGNOSIS: Fetus CM. INTERVENTIONS: The fetus was diagnosed as fetal CM by US and MRI, then the pregnant woman received a drug-induced labor treatment. After the neonate was delivered, the measurement was performed on the weight, length, head circumference, abdomen circumference, and bilateral thigh circumference. OUTCOMES: A female dead neonate was delivered from the vagina of the gravida, showing congenital anus absence. Prenatal ultrasound demonstrated right kidney duplication, hydronephrosis, and right ureteral dilatation. Meanwhile, prenatal MRI showed a cystic cavity, double collecting systems of right kidney, right ureteral dilatation, and right rectum dilatation. In addition, general parameters are as follows: weight: 2280 g; length: 39 cm; head circumference: 26.3 cm; abdomen circumference: 31 cm; right thigh circumference: 17 cm, and left thigh circumference: 18 cm. LESSONS: US combined with MRI can not only provide reliable evidence for fetal CM in the third trimester but also offer crucial information to the pregnant women to establish clinic treatment programs as early as possible.

RESUMEN

We report on the formation of water-in-water liquid crystal emulsions with permeable colloidal assemblies. Rodlike cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) spontaneously self-assemble into a helical arrangement with the coexistence of nonionic, hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran, whereas the two polymer solutions are thermodynamically incompatible. Stable water-in-water emulsions are easily prepared by mixing the respective CNC/polymer solutions, showing micrometric CNC/PEG dispersed droplets and a continuous CNC/dextran phase. With time, the resulting emulsion demixes into an upper, droplet-lean isotropic phase and a bottom, droplet-rich cholesteric phase. Owing to the osmotic pressure gradient between PEG and dextran phases, target transfer of cellulose nanoparticles occurs across the water/water interface to reassemble into a liquid crystal-in-liquid crystal emulsion with global cholesteric organization. The observed structural, optical, and temporal evolution confirm that the colloidal particles in the two immiscible phases experience short-range interactions and form long-range assemblies across the interface.

RESUMEN

Photonic crystals based on plasmonic or dielectric periodic structures have attracted considerable interest owing to their capabilities to control light-matter interactions with tailored precision. By using a nanocellulose derived chiral liquid crystal as a building block, here we demonstrate a bio-inspired dual photonic structure that contains the combination of microscopic periodic 1D surface grating and nanoscopic helical organization, giving rise to programmable colour mixing and polarization rotation. We show that a variation in the photonic band-gap in the bulk matrix leads to simultaneous control over the reflection and diffraction of light with controllable iridescence.
